Dream Team Goes Green?

You could be forgiven for thinking Radio Clatterbridge's Magical Memories programme has gone all environmentally-friendly by saving a bit of electricity. But in fact this strange photo of John Roberts and his "dream team", taken in a dark Studio One last week, has more devious roots. Apparently John likes to present the request show with the lights dimmed low. So request collector Richie Calvert brought in a miner's light to help him read his dedications. What Richie didn't know was that the rest of the team also had head torches. The result was probably the first Radio Clatterbridge programme to be produced by torch-light... and a swift promise to put the studio lights on properly in the future!

Give Us A Wave!

Radio Clatterbridge could be transmitting its programmes over the airwaves for the first time in its history by the end of the year. That was the bold assessment by new Chairman Steve Lord as he presented an update on plans to broadcast on AM (or Medium Wave) at the charity's Annual General Meeting last night. The move is still subject to funding, licensing and planning permission but if all goes well, the station could be transmitting a signal some time in 2010. Radio Clatterbridge programmes are currently heard only through a hard-wired land line system at bedsides. A new on-site transmitter would mean that the charity could broadcast to every single person at Clatterbridge Health Park.

A simple idea turned into a 500 donation to Radio Clatterbridge this evening. Volunteers of the charity were asked at our EGM to suggest how we could increase our depleted funds. So when presenter John Roberts suggested speaking to the Unilever Port Sunlight Workplace Trust, Radio Clatterbridge chairman Dave Adams jumped at the chance. This evening Dave and John accepted a cheque from Trust counterpart Steve Thomas MBE and Brian Higginson from Unilever. Thanks also to Vauxhall Motors Employees Charity Fund which donated 200 to the station this month.

The singer/guitarist/songwriter told Monday Mixture presenter Dave Robinson how she is currently putting the finishing touches to her album with her band, The Worrydolls. Listeners were treated to taste of the album when the LIPA student performed 3 songs live in the studio. Zoe writes all her own material, and has been singing, playing and writing since she was 12 years old. Her influences include Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy, Suzanne Vega and Kate Walsh. In the second hour, Kevin told the listeners how he and his band the KCO played a gig in the View Two Gallery in Liverpool last month. Heavily promoted on Radio Clatterbridge, the set raised over 200 for Clatterbridge Cancer research. You can catch up with Zoe and find out were she is playing next at myspace.com/zoenicolmusic, and Kev's band at myspace.com/kevincritchley

Christmas at Claire House

Radio Clatterbridge has been getting into the festive spirit with a weekend of fun at Claire House. Past and present members of the Saturday Crew reunited at the station yesterday ahead of visiting the Claire House Christmas Fayre. There they sampled coffee & mince pies in a tepee specially erected in the grounds, marvelled at the hot air balloon, visited the many toy, craft & card stalls - but skipped on Father Christmas as a lot of children had got there first. And Afternoon Edition presenter Andy Bonner was helping switch on the Christmas tree lights at the hospice today in their annual A Light For Love celebration.

Memory Laine

Radio Clatterbridge took a trip down Memory Laine tonight, when a listener told us about a chance meeting with the original Mr Rhythm. Request collector Richard Calvert had a long conversation with a patient who recalled meeting Frankie Laine in a bar and getting one of his last autographs. We thought it was a good excuse for a tribute to the crooner, and John Roberts hosted a special edition of Magical Memories playing many of Frankie's best known songs.
