"I loved the learning curve," says Ian. "and although it was just the start of something, I felt at that stage that I would never learn enough to make it a career. That said, I must have picked up a few pointers and, more than anything, it helped me discover my 'voice'." Then, as now, Ian presented the sports news. The Everton fan began his football broadcasting fanaticism on Mid-Morning Music with Dave Williams, Sid Jones and Phil Rodgers. Ian moved to Radio City after a short spell on work experience. He was advised to get a degree, so left for college. Within a matter of weeks, he wormed his way into almost full-time employment at BBC Three Counties. "My first real job though was in the North East at BBC Radio Cleveland. I spent six years as a sport producer, reading bulletins and football commentating before they offered me the chance to present the Drivetime show." He's now living back in Oxton with his wife Vicki, and their two young twins. And Ian, who has his long-term sights set on becoming Terry Wogan's replacement, has also had a transfer to BBC Radio Merseyside. "I came here as the Station Sound Producer, but I was quickly back on the air as the new Breakfast Sports Reporter and stand-in presenter." When George Bush visited Tony Blair's Sedgefield constituency, Ian's coverage of the event won him gold Sony and Frank Gillard Awards. He also won a Gillard for Middlesbrough's trip to the Carling Cup final in the "Welsh Weekender". Ian says Radio Clatterbridge undoubtedly helped his career. "I'm just guilty at not re-investing my time at Radio Clatterbridge now, but after six early mornings a week I need my bed too much!"
