Folk Tales

Folk music lovers were in heaven when Radio Clatterbridge brought them live tunes from one of Wirral's best festivals.

Listeners heard exclusive highlights of the four-day Folk On The Coast event in Ellesmere Port.

Acoustic Routes presenter Gray Hawke was on hand to record a selection of more than 200 artists who were performing at the festival in glorious weather.

Amongst the guests on the special edition of the programme was singer Anna Shannon.

"I first met Anna Shannon at the Folk on the Coast Festival in 2009, when we sat on adjacent straw bales in a marquee playing our songs while a howling gale raged outside!" - Presenter Gray Hawke

Anna, who's from Yorkshire, is a prolific songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with seven studio albums to her name.

The headline artist on the Sunday afternoon was Steve Tilston, a singer-songwriter and guitarist who's often described as a "musician's musician".

He recently appeared on Jools Holland's "Later" show and over the years has become a top target for any folk club or festival booker putting a lineup together.

Lucy Ward is a rising star of the British folk scene, having won the "Best Newcomer" at the 2012 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

"I was brought up on the Beatles and Bowie. The most I thought folk music had to offer was Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. But when I was 14 my mum and dad bought me a guitar for my birthday... Nine years later I can say I'm doing it professionally." - Singer Lucy Ward

Gray also caught up with Dougie Maclean, Midlands-based youth ensemble Wildfire Folk and The Blue Pig Orchestra from Blackpool who went down a storm.

Now in its ninth year, it's organised by John and Angie Owen who visited the station back in May to promote the event.
