Guitarist Mackenzie James Cregan keeps it in the family

The son of a musician who’s played with Rod Stewart and Steve Harley has told Radio Clatterbridge how he hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Mackenzie James Cregan was born in Los Angeles but is currently living on Merseyside after becoming a student at Sir Paul McCartney’s "fame" school LIPA.

Described as an honorary Scouser, he’s now working on producing his own music while studying sound technology.

“Being a huge Beatles fan, that was something I really loved about the city. The music scene is still so strong here.” - Mackenzie James Cregan

Mackenzie’s dad, Jim Cregan, played lead guitar for Rod Stewart in the early days of his solo career co-writing Forever Young and a number of other hits in the 1970s and 1980s.

He also played on Do You Think I’m Sexy, Baby Jane and the Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel hit Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile).

The showbusiness links don’t end there though.

Elton John’s lyricist Bernie Taupin, who was in another band with Mackenzie’s dad, went to see him and his mum in hospital when he was born.

He told Coffee Club presenter Di Gaskell how he wanted to join the industry from an early age.

“I remember seeing my dad on the stage with a really cool Stratocaster. I just watched the front of the stage in awe… Every time I’m on stage I get to feel that.” - Mackenzie James Cregan

Mackenzie’s new single The Woman From The East was released last month.

It’s based on his experience of going on a bad date in LA while he dreamt of going out with a girl he met in New York.

He produced the track himself but his dad helped in the studio, playing slide guitar in the introduction.

“There’s a bit of a generation gap but its always good to work with him. It keeps it in the family.” - Mackenzie James Cregan

Listeners were also treated to a live acoustic version of Mackenzie’s new song, The Deep End, which he was about to record.

The single will be released early next year.

  • Mackenzie will be performing at Heebie Jeebies, Seel Street, Liverpool on Wednesday 12th December 2018.
