Phil Rodgers

Phil Rodgers "If you want to be a DJ, join hospital radio" - that's the advice that's been given to budding presenters by programme controllers around the country for the last few decades. Although Radio Clatterbridge is about much more than "becoming a DJ", Phil Rodgers is a shining example that, if you've got the dedication, you too can make it.

"I joined the team in 1991 after hearing an advert on Radio Merseyside," explains Phil. "I started out helping Dave Williams and Sid Jones on a Saturday morning, the training ground for many new members. I then presented the Saturday afternoon slot - a request show called Saturday Selection with another member, Stacey Gilbert."

The professional work soon started to pour in for Phil with stints at local radio stations across the north of England. In 2006, he was commended for his work as Programme Controller at Chester's Dee 106.3 in the radio industry's national awards. He moved to The Bay in Lancaster in 2007.

"Radio Clatterbridge provided a great training ground for me, it helped me realise that radio was what I wanted to do and both Dave Williams and Sid Jones were very encouraging for me to get involved."

Phil is still in touch with many people from the station. And he has many good memories...

"I remember Sid bellowing 'If your granny wouldn't like it - we won't play it!' Oh, and Dave Adams' chair collapsing and he still carried on with his TV feature, despite everyone else laughing!"

Phil's advice for people wanting to get involved in the station is simply to "do it. Whether you want to really work in radio, are unsure about career plans, or just want to help, I'd certainly recommend Radio Clatterbridge. I really enjoyed it there because I gained experience which I could never have achieved elsewhere. And it's fun!"
