U3A stands for the University for the Third Age. Created in France in the early 1970s, the organisation has grown substancially.

In Britain, the "Third Agers" themselves decided they had the skills to organise and teach in their own learning groups and local U3As were formed. Members learn for the pleasure of it, so no qualifications are required and none are given.

There are several branches in Wirral. The subjects tackled are wide and varied. ducation groups range from European Studies, to creative writing and history. The recreational subjects include walking, Scrabble and theatre visits.

More information is available from the U3A website.
