The conversation became quite meaty when presenter Phil Rostance interviewed an award-winning Wirral butcher.

Callum Edge popped into the studio after winning a national accolade from the BBC.

The awards were dubbed the Oscars of the food world by Jamie Oliver.

Edge Butchers and Son was one of 1,700 butchers across the country put forward for BBC Radio 4’s Food and Farming Awards 2014 for being the best national retailer.

The meat specialist business, set-up six generations ago in 1844, is based on New Chester Road, New Ferry as well as Church Farm, Thurstaston.

Owner Callum was oblivious his company had been entered into the competition as customers were responsible for nominating their favourite butchers.

Callum told Radio Clatterbridge that he was in shock when he first found out they’d won at the ceremony in Bristol – but a nice shock! He said that his team of staff had been extremely loyal over the years and he thanked Ian, Craig, John, Matt, Stan and Roger – who are six of the best!

Callum told Coffee Club listeners all about learning the ropes from his father, John, from the age of four and treating the animals with compassion and ensuring they received the best food available.

He also revealed how he supplies customers and restaurants across Wirral and beyond.

Phil said it was a fascinating interview with Callum. He added that his level of knowledge was incredible.
