John Manship looking through our collection

Vinyl Goes Under The Hammer

A selection of rare records is going under the hammer in aid of Radio Clatterbridge.

The vintage vinyl has been hand-picked from the station’s 64 year old music library by an expert.

Presenter Gray Hawke got in touch with fellow enthusiast and aunctioneer John Manship when after leafing through the station’s collection.

After a visit to the studio, John welcomed Gray to his base in Leicestershire to receive more than thirty records.

Five of them are being put forward for worldwide auction, while the remainder have been sold.

John’s collection puts ours to shame. He stocks 15,000 albums and twelve-inch discs and half a million 45rpm singles!

He hit the headlines in December when a rare Northern Soul single, Open The Door To Your Heart by Darrell Banks, sold for nearly £15,000 at auction.

“I don’t think we will get as much as that for any of our records, but it makes sense to raise funds from enthusiasts rather than watch them gather dust in our library.” – Gray Hawke, presenter

The records up for auction are:

The Equals – Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boy / Baby Come Back / Stone Cold Cat

Dusty Springfield – That’s The Kind Of Love I’ve Got For You

Rolling Stones – I Don’t Know Why

Beatles – Please Please Me

Sex Pistols – Anarchy In The UK

Most of the songs are not included in the station’s regular on-air playlist.

Listeners are still able to request their favourite tunes but they are now more likely to be played from a computer rather than the original vinyl.

The auctions will take place on John’s Rare Soul Man website.
