Youngest jazz singer Astrid gets ready for Christmas

A 9 year old schoolgirl, who is singing at Liverpool One’s Christmas lights switch on, has told Radio Clatterbridge how her friends are taking her fame in their stride.

Astrid Smith was mentored by when she beat thousands of hopefuls to become one of the finalists in ITV’s The Voice Kids.

Mum Amanda explained to Coffee Club presenter Ian Grant how Astrid was scouted by the programme after entering a teen star competition.

“We’ve not even thought about Astrid singing. We only ever sang on holiday when we used to do karaoke. But I noticed she had this deep, soulful voice.” – Amanda Smith

Both The Voice and Britain’s Got Talent were interested in her talent and she ended up auditioning for The Voice Kids in London.

Aged just 8 at the time, Astrid performed for the judges on a stage in front of hundreds of people and began to cry when turned around and invited her onto his team.

“To get a turn from one of my favourite coaches, it was just amazing. I’m so happy with the coach I got.” – Astrid

Now the youngest jazz and blues singer in the UK, Astrid says she is loving every minute of her fame.

She told listeners she is a big Billie Holiday fan and wants to duet with Paloma Faith or Sia.

“My nan and my mum love jazz. It just kind of got stuck in my brain.” – Astrid

Astrid didn’t make it past the sing off but her mentor did write to her saying he looks forward to hearing her music in the future.

Since then the 9 year old has continued to perform, singing with Daniel O’Donnell at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and has a busy time in the countdown to Christmas.

As well as being at the Liverpool One switch on, she will be performing at Carols By Candlelight at the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on Wednesday 5th December 2018 in aid of the NSPCC.

Her EP, This Is Me, is available for download now and she is currently learning her favourite festive tunes in time for Christmas.
