Radio industry says farewell to Monty Lister
May 20, 2019
The death of one of our founder members was reported in a number of broadcast industry publications.
Monty Lister, who is credited with securing the survival of Radio Clatterbridge during its early years in the 1950s, was well-known for recording the first radio interview with The Beatles.
The 92 year old maintained his links with the station during a long and successful career at BBC Radio Merseyside.
Radio Today quoted a tribute from our honorary president Roger Hazlewood and described some of the other stars that Monty met.
“He interviewed a number of well-known celebrities of the era including Bill Haley, Cliff Richard and Gene Vincent and he recorded possibly the last interview with Eddie Cochran.” – Radio Today
Meanwhile, Prolific North carried a quote from Monty himself when he helped celebrate our 65th anniversary in 2016.
“Having established that we were going to have Radio Clatterbridge it became obvious that we were going to need to stock some records. We asked for donations and amazing collections came in. We even had one peculiar record at 81rpm!” – Monty Lister
