Soul Train steams in to Port Sunlight
August 23, 2019
At Radio Clatterbridge, we love our music so we were delighted to hear that the hit show Soul Train is coming to Wirral.
Listeners to the Coffee Club heard all about it from producer and host Wayne Kennedy.
He told our presenter Steve Evans how he returned to his teenage roots and love of soul and rhythm & blues music for the show.
After about fifty performances a year in venues across the UK, the production is coming to the Gladstone Theatre for the first time on Friday 20th August 2019.
The 66 year old from Derbyshire said he wanted a show of soul classics which harks back to the early days of Tamla Motown, Stax and Atlantic records though to the disco years and beyond when the dance floor was king.
“I thought maybe this is the final roll of the dice of my career at my age. So I thought I’ll go back to my roots where it all started.”
With six singers on and off stage, it leads to a lot of variation in the fast-moving show and all accompanied by lots of interesting video footage.
Amongst the hits from the 1960s and 1970s, the audience can expect to hear songs from the likes of Stevie Wonder, The Isley Brothers, The Supremes, Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Candi Staton and Whitney Houston.
The cast of acclaimed performers will be lead by Wayne, who has sold more than one million concert tickets around the world with his The Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular Show.
“These songs still sounds as good fifty years later. Nothing has really surpassed it.”
The family show attracts an audience of all ages and Wayne told us he’s always surprised how younger people know the lyrics to all of the old hits.
Wayne also revealed that he was inspired by our late patron, Sir Ken Dodd, to constantly tweak and improve the performance.
“I learned something from that great Liverpudlian in the show. I make notes on every song and what happens in between the songs because that’s what he did.”
He added that he always enjoys meeting new friends when the audience gets the chance to meet the performers after the event.
