Remembering Ken Arnold
October 30, 2019
Volunteers at Radio Clatterbridge have been saddened to hear that one of the station’s biggest supporters has died after a long illness.
Ken Arnold was first treasurer and then chairman of Clatterbridge Hospitals League of Friends from 2009 to 2018 before being made president of the charity.
Ken was a great friend to Radio Clatterbridge and embraced the strong links between our two organisations throughout his tenure.
Numerous League events including fashion shows at Heswall Hall, a ’60s night at Bromborough Golf Club and talks at Wirral Rugby and Cricket Club saw the Radio Clatterbridge sound system in action.
Dave Adams served as Radio Clatterbridge rep on the League committee, working closely with Ken for a decade including 3 years as his vice chairman.
“Ken stepped in to the breach at very short notice when the previous chairman, Philip Owen, passed away after 20 years in charge. He steadied the ship and provided much needed continuity at a very difficult time. The League embraced a wide range of activities during Ken’s tenure. Perhaps the most unusual was raffling a share in a race horse where I ended up organising thousands of raffle tickets and adjudicating over the draw at Harry Fry’s stables in Dorset. Ken and I then rang each of the winners. This contributed in no small part to the provision of the sensory garden at the Clatterbridge Rehab Centre. Ken made a considerable contribution to the League and the wider hospital. He will be much missed.” – Dave Adams
Since 1968, the League has provided the means to listen to our broadcasts.
The major expenditure for that year was the provision of stethoscope headsets for every bed at the hospital.
This enabled every patient to receive radio programmes including the service provided by Port Sunlight Boys Club with £2,500 invested by the League on this item alone.
Nowadays, the League provides the staff and loan personal radios which the ward team issues. In Ken’s time as chairman, the PC tower was amongst the loans provided by the League to the station.
“I have a great deal of respect for Ken. Without fail he always asked how I was even when he was ill himself. He will be sorely missed. His loss is a massive blow to not only the League and Radio Clatterbridge, but to his family and many friends he gained over the years carrying out his role.” – Steve Evans, Radio Clatterbridge Chairman
Ken was a family man, a keen bowls player and Tranmere supporter.
His funeral will be held at 3pm on Monday 4th November 2019 at Landican and afterwards at The Little Fox, at the side of The Red Fox, Thornton Hough.
