Plans for new Maggie's Centre at Clatterbridge

Radio Clatterbridge listeners have heard about a new plan to bring a permanent Maggie's centre to the health park.

Described as a ‘lifeline’ by visitors, the new facility will be built at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as part of an overall £4m investment by the Steve Morgan Foundation for two new centres on Merseyside.

Maggie’s Centres provide free practical and emotional support for people living with cancer.

The existing interim facility at Clatterbridge has seen demand for services far outstrip expectations, with 14,000 visitors last year.

Fundraising manager Holly Smith visited the studio to tell Coffee Club presenter Steve Evans all about the plans.

She explained how the building, which is still subject to planning permission, will be constructed next to the current temporary premises.

"It looks absolutely incredible. Beautiful gardens. Loads of windows taking in the beautiful view. Very theraputic." - Holly Smith, Fundraising Manager

Redrow founder and chairman Steve Morgan will be managing the build himself.

“So many people have been affected by cancer, or know someone who has been affected by cancer, and the work undertaken by the staff at Maggie’s Centres across the country offers invaluable practical and emotional support when people who are being treated – and their families and friends – need it most." - Steve Morgan, Redrow

The charity has now launched an appeal to raise money to fund running costs once the buildings are open.

The Million for Maggies appeal is calling on the community to get behind Maggie’s.

"It's an absolutely transformational gift that he's giving and really exciting that we're going to be able to build these new two centres that are going to be here for years to come." - Holly Smith, Fundraising Manager

Subject to the planning permission being granted, work on the new permanent Maggie’s centre is set to get underway within the next few months.

The second site will be at the new Royal Liverpool Hospital after The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre opens in the city.
