Country show shortlisted for national award

Dan Coats

One of Radio Clatterbridge's newest presenters is celebrating after his programme was shortlisted for a national award.

Country Connection is broadcast live every Friday evening as part of our specialist music strand Radio Clatterbridge Presents.

The news that the show is in the running to win a National Hospital Radio Award was welcomed by host Dan Coats.

"I'm delighted to have been shortlisted out of so many entries! It's hard to believe that it's been two years since I first started to present for Radio Clatterbridge and I'm very grateful to have been given such a fantastic opportunity to develop my own on-air style."

Dan is involved with three distinctly different shows on the station.

He receives a wide range of song requests for Live From The Bridge and helps out with what he calls the "organised chaos" of Radio Clatterbridge Sport on Saturday afternoons.

But it was country music that first got him interested in radio.

"From the moment I started I was itching for the chance to share my enthusiasm for such a broad and vibrant genre. So I am extra-pleased to be nominated in the category of Best Specialist Music Programme."

Dan explained how he decided to continue the philosophy of his predecessor, Mike Kinney, to use the show to keep listeners connected to the world of country music.

He also revealed how he enjoys finding new music to play on the programme including emerging local talent like Megan Louise whose debut EP he has been showcasing on air.

Dan is now researching Merseyside's country music heritage with established acts like Liverpool's The Hillsiders and Charlie Landsborough who hails from Birkenhead.

"The health park caters to people of all ages, so my goal is always to find the perfect balance between the legends we all love and the stars of today who are helping to re-invent the genre, people like Kacey Musgraves, Sam Outlaw and Maren Morris."

The winners announced at the HBA Conference in Bolton from 27th-29th March 2020.

We wish Dan the best of luck!
