Making headlines down under

A globe-trotting cuddly koala has helped Radio Clatterbridge win a competition and become a talking point in Australia.

The toy, dubbed Barry, is a mascot of an animal hospital in Port Macquarie, New South Wales.

The Gum Tips newsletter

We reported how the koala visited our studios in June.

Now the visit has featured in the latest newsletter from the Koala Hospital, while Barry has chosen the photograph of him being interviewed by Dave Adams as his favourite!

"As at the Koala Hospital, this community based radio station is staffed by volunteers and they broadcast news and entertainment 24/7 throughout the hospital." - Gum Tips newsletter

Barry told the newsletter that his new-found fame made him feel nervous.

But we're glad he popped in, even if he was a little quiet when the microphone went live.

"The announcers were so impressed with his broadcasting technique that they considered training him as a DJ – not the shock jock kind, of course!" - Gum Tips newsletter

Thanks to our request collector Mal Vaughan for organising.
