The Studios at Radio Clatterbridge

Have you ever wanted to go behind the scenes at a radio station?

Studio One

Let’s start in the main studio, where the majority of Radio Clatterbridge programmes are broadcast from.

Our presenters sit behind the mixing desk and control everything that the listeners can hear. They have the ability to listen to anything before putting it on the air. This is how presenters can cue up music to start exactly when they want it to.

In Studio One we can play music via computer, MP3 and CD. Everything we broadcast is recorded and kept for legal reasons. There are three microphones: one for the presenter and two for guests. The studio also has the capability to put phone callers directly onto the air.

The mixing desk itself has faders, giving presenters the ability to turn on and off the many different pieces of equipment. It also allows the presenter to check the volume of the programme and adjust it if necessary. The news service comes into the station via a satellite receiver in the main studio.

Presenters can access the internet in the studio to enable them to keep abreast of the latest events and they can keep an eye on our security system too - just in case!

Studio Two

This is Radio Clatterbridge's news and production studio. It can also be used as an emergency backup to Studio One. Although much smaller, it works in much the same way as the main studio and contains the equipment which Radio Clatterbridge previously used there.

It takes just a flick of a switch to put Studio Two on air. This facility is used whenever engineering work is taking place in the main studio, ensuring the listeners never miss out on a programme. We also carry out production and editing in this studio.

Broadcast Kit

Our transmitter box and all the equipment needed to stream our programmes over the internet is kept in a separate secure room. The machines here work around the clock to send our programmes to the aerial over seemingly endless cables.

Radio Clatterbridge AM Medium Wave Aerial

Our radio mast was built in October 2011. The one watt low-powered aerial is essentially just a 10 metre high fibre glass pole – but it allows us to broadcast on 1386AM (Medium Wave) within Clatterbridge Health Park.

Outside

Finally, we return back to the lobby and main entrance of the station.

The studios were opened in April 2001 on our 50th anniversary. In 2021, Arrowe Sound, which produces programmes for Arrowe Park Hospital, moved into spare office accommodation in our complex.

Please contact us if you would like to be shown around the building in person.
