National Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Day

Dawn Miller - Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse explaining all about CNS Day which is on 15th March

Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse for WUTH, based at Elm House, Dawn Miller dropped by the studios to chat to Steve Evans to make us aware of National Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Day which will be celebrated on Wednesday 15 March.

The Macmillan site specific CNS teams across WUTH do a fantastic job supporting patients, families, staff affected by cancer and are based on both the Clatterbridge and Arrowe park sites . Support is also available via Macmillan Information Centre based in the foyer of Arrowe Park Hospital.

Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialists focus on survival and are there to support patients through the whole cancer journey, with a particular emphasis on well-being, and getting back to ‘ the new normal ‘ returning to work and adopting healthy life style choices such as physical activity , all helping to keep you 'Living Longer'.

The facts speak for themselves, with one in two (4 thousand on Wirral alone each year) now getting some form of cancer. Early diagnosis is vital, and Clinical Nurse Specialists have a role to play in promoting screening and early detection. Currently approximately 68% of people survive cancer and we are working to improve this. A current trial is looking at a simple blood test for early detection of cancer which is very exciting.
